Expertise IrelandIntroduction to expertiseireland
The creation, dissemination and exploitation of knowledge are the keys to unlocking the potential of the island economy. expertiseireland.com, the all-island research portal, provides a fast and effective gateway to the island’s knowledge base. It is an advanced online portal, which combines, in one searchable database, up-to-date details of more than 5,100 expert profiles, as well as funding information, technology transfer and commercial expertise. expertiseireland.com contains a large database of expertise information, which is directly populated from the knowledge management systems of the island’s universities and institutes of technology.
The expert profiles contain information on research interests, projects, publications, conferences, patents and consultancy history. In addition, innovative ideas produced in the third level sector and which are available for exploitation, are presented in the technology transfer licensing opportunities section. The portal incorporates a free funding database, which provides registered users with information on relevant sources of funding on a local, national and European level. Users receive the additional benefit of email alerts triggered by changes to targeted expert profiles or funding opportunities. The latest news section provides up-to-date information on issues relevant to R&D, education, finance, and funding.
The portal has been primarily designed to facilitate the identification of expertise and to serve as the first point of contact between those who create new ideas and those who can exploit them. By providing a single access point, expertiseireland.com facilitates and encourages industry-academic linkages and business-to-business connections. It creates enhanced collaborative opportunities and helps the business and academic communities to avail of the world-class expertise and intellectual capital on the island.
The expertiseireland.com portal is owned by the Irish Universities Association (IUA, formerly the Conference of Heads of Irish Universities) and funded by InterTradeIreland.com, the cross border business development agency.

Postage - Pricing in ProportionAugust 2006 witnessed the introduction of Royal Mail’s new pricing system, Pricing in Proportion (PiP.) Mail pricing will now incorporate the size, shape and weight of mail, in order to better reflect the cost of sorting, handling and delivering mail.
Under Pricing in proportion, items will fall into one of three categories: letter, large letter and packet. No more than 30 per cent of business mail is expected to be affected by the price changes, and Royal Mail estimates
that up to half of the mail affected will become cheaper to send.
